—A little about yourself:
I am 46 years old. My job consists of sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day. I would consider myself as moderately active when not at work or at Crossfit Destroyer.
—How did you get into CrossFit?
My Son takes Martial Arts at the studio next door to Crossfit Destroyer. Joe and Steph offered a weight loss challenge that lasted for 6 weeks. My wife was really interested but I was not sure I was up for the challenge. I had belonged to a gym in the past but was never very serious. Anyhow, she convinced me to join the challenge with her and I have been a “Destroyer” ever since. In fact we came in 3rd place for the competition.
—How has CrossFit changed you outside the gym?
I have more stamina for everyday activities as well as any fun adventures that may come my way. Sometimes I will go running with my son and his karate team and it sure is nice to be able to keep up with many of the kids. Also, I am not as hesitant to try new things. There are 2 reasons for that 1) I am more confident in my physical abilities 2) I am less afraid to fail at something I try. I fail at the gym frequently. That’s just how it goes. It could be a new move I’m being taught, an old move that I can’t get, or a heavy lift when I think I’m stronger than I am. Failing is just part of the process of getting better. If they had an award for falling down I may be the champ at that.
—What makes CrossFit Destroyer unique?
I can’t compare it to any other Crossfit Gyms because I have never been to any others. I can say this about Crossfit Destroyer though, Steph and Joe are super nice and willing to help you out all the time. If I am hurting or there is a move that I can’t do in a work out they will give me an alternate move so I don’t have to miss a workout. Every single person that I have worked out with there has been nice. I have worked out with high school kids, people in their 60’s and everyone in between. Everyone goes at their own pace not the persons next to them.
—Advice for people just getting started:
Just do it. You get twice the workout in half the time as opposed to going to a regular gym. Also you don’t have to figure out what you want to do for your workout. Steph programs your workout for you. Going to Crossfit Destroyer is pretty much like having your own personal trainer. They tell you what to do and how to do it, and then correct you when needed.
